PRESS RELEASE EXLUSIVELY WRITTEN FOR BG PORTALS by IAN MICHAELS

    April 15th, 2012

The Italian-Bulgarian actress/singer Maria Elena Infantino starred in Édith Piaf, a one-woman show celebrating the extraordinary life of the French music legend. On the piano was the virtuoso pianist Dr. Georgi Slavchev. Directed by Mandy Riggi. In Los Angeles, Thursday, April 12th to Saturday, April 14th. Presented by the Bulgarian-American Cultural Center and Mega Mogula, Inc., the show was an astounding success, one truly international Hollywood moment – at the Marilyn Monroe Theatre of the Lee Strasberg Institute, at the corner of (Rita) Hayworth street in West Hollywood, with spectators speaking different languages and coming from as far as San Francisco. The 3-day run played before full house every night. The culmination was on Saturday, when the tickets sold out early, but people kept on flocking at the box office, asking to be admitted as standing audience. Maria Elena sang with passion and energy, bringing energetic, loud ovations after every number. In a dramatic, emotionally involving fashion some of the most popular Piaf songs were performed – the timeless evergreens Non, je ne regrette de rien, La vie en rose, Milord. The classic Les amants d’un jour brought tender, romantic poetry while Feuilles mortes (Autumn Leaves) was recreated in an original, novel way, within a range of delicately sad emotions, but finishing with ardor and passion. After playing to critical acclaim last year in Rome, this was the show’s debut in the USA.

Édith Piaf, the show has a place in the honorary lineup of events taking place around the globe leading to the 50th anniversary of Édith Piaf’s death in October 2013.

The US Postal Service recently announced a joint release with the French La Poste of stamps commemorating Édith Piaf and Miles Davis, two musicians popular and beloved in both countries. Maria Elena has been invited to perform on June 12th, at the First Day of Issue Ceremony at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City.
